Due circumstance beyond our control we had to cancel our plans for skitrips in 2014 and 2015. In fact, in recent years we only went in 2010 and 2012.
So this year we once again made the effort.
We decided to go back to the same area we first visited in 1983, the Schladming-Dachstein area in Austria. Österreich is my favourite country in the Alps, I am less inclined to the French and the Swiss as a people.
It was the first time stayed in Haus im Ennstal, where we rented an apartment for a week.

The first morning we found little snow around our apartment, but the slopes in the distance held a promise.

We immediately took to the authentic character of the center of Haus im Ennstal.

'Auf eigene Gefahr!' seemed like an exaggeration under these mild winter circumstances..

Sunday midday: low clouds, temperatures a little above zero (Celsius). Far from ideal.
We needed a fresh layer of snow and lower temperatures!

The area is linked with skislopes and gondolas: Hauser-Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm.

On the monday morning we woke up with a fresh layer of snow outside!

Snow continued to fall all through the monday.

Before we went skiing I had to walk around with my camera because this could well be all the snow I'd see this winter!

My route to the bakery every morning, to get some fresh bread for breakfast.

The area in front of our appartment was now fully covered with snow. I found it to be an area where
parasailers landed. The continued snowfall did of course limit our visibility on the skislopes, but who could complain!

Closer to God. This was on the tuesday, even more snow had fallen.
Someone could turn the tab: we had enough snow now, thank you very much!

Haus im Ennstal has a very charming historic center. I think we may well return here!

Gasthof Reiter is where we dined twice. We also tried a few other restaurants, a pizza place and Hotel Kirchenwirt ('mit dem riesen schnitzel!'). And we made a few meals ourselves when we decided to stay indoors.

On the wednesday the weather cleared..

Getting reacquainted with Rohrmoos-Hochwurzen. We started the day with coffee at Restaurant Sonneck where
we spent so many aprés-ski moments over the past 30+ years. Good memories when my parents still joined us here.

I took most of my skiing lessons here at the 'Hochwurzen', with the Tritzer Schischule.

At this point I always have a little trouble with my vertigo, it takes a few days before I can shake most
of may fear of heights. The splendid weather and snow conditions do help quite a lot!

I never tried this!

All through wednesday and thursday we had the best possible conditions.

Over the past 30-40 years we did not go skiing every year, Ada & I did not always go together and when we went
we did not always stay in the Schladming-Dachstein area. But it is the area we most often returned to!

At the base station where the Hochwurzen is linked with the Reiteralm.

At times we had the slopes to ourselves, at other times we had groups of people to deal with.

A moment when things really come together!
Alexander took to skis on most days, only on friday he used his snowboard; he went very well.
A great pity that Ada got her arm injured on the very first day and had to stop skiing. A raincheck planned in 2017!

Another day coming to a close..

The friday brought an excellent cloud cover to protect the snow and we enjoyed good
snow conditions most of the day; the low clouds lifted a little and we got clear skiing conditions again.
