MURALS @GORINCHEM (GORKUM/GORCUM)
I've selected most of the 10 murals we found.
This here is LEES ('Read') at the side of a bookshop in the Gasthuisstraat.
I must have overlooked DE PIJP (Pipe) here in the Tinnegietersstraat.
BLIK MET ZOUTE BOLLEN @Gasthuistraat
Here in the Gasthuisstraat at no.36 was the bakery of Jacob de Kroes since 1849. Jacob bought the bakery from his boss for 2.125 guilders. He came up with the savoury biscuits that grew into a specialty: the Gorcumse Zoute Bollen.
| The old fortress with its narrow alleys hides many stories. The murals in the alleys bring them to life. Most of them are by the well-known artist Jan is de man. Some have been around for a while. Each mural tells a real Gorcum story. Walk the alleys route and unravel the secret behind the murals. |

KLEDINGREK ('Clothes rack')
There was always a lot of trade and activity here. From beer brewers, pipe makers to carpenters and silversmiths.
DE NAAIMACHINE @Burgstraat
The Burgstraat is the oldest shopping street here. The mural is a reminder of the first sewing machine shop in the Netherlands. It was here in Gorinchem, more than 150 years ago. And the store still exists. The youngest member
of the family, Yvonne van Keekem says: "My great-great-grandfather, tailor Johannes Cornelis, went to a fashion fair
in Paris in 1870. There he saw a Singer sewing machine. Something completely new at the time. He was so enthusiastic that he decided to import the machine into the Netherlands. It was a bull's-eye!"

DE KROKET @Karnemelksteeg
Viewed from the Hoogstraat,on the corner of the Karnemelksteeg we see a larger-than-life 'croquette'.
Behind a glass door, like at the snack bar next door. This idea of vending machine probably came from Germany
at the beginning of the 20th century. From there, the phenomenon spread to other countries.

DE JENEVERFLES @Zustersteeg
When you see this image, do you also get an appetite for a hassebassie, a neut, or a glass of gin? That was the intention of Jacobus van Ouwerkerk, born in 1875. Every two years he painted a new advertisement here. Like this one for his Holland brand of gin. That's one of the spirits he distilled around the corner, at Zusterhuis 1-2.

HAMER EN BEITEL @Kerksteeg
The people of Gorcum have always been an industrious people. This hammer and chisel refer to it.
Pipe makers, tanners, potters, carpenters, brewers... You could find them all here.

KEUKEN VAN DE HOOFDWACHT (@Kraanstraat).
Do you see those pots simmering? A nice view of the kitchen behind this. But it's only been there since 2016.
This used to be the main location for the guards, the soldiers who made their rounds. Hence 'Hoofdwacht'.
It is one of the many reminders of Gorinchem's military past.
De 'Hoofdwacht' is a nice place to enjoy food and/or drinks @Grote Markt (across the 'VVV').
THE DAHLIA @Knipsteeg. dates from 2022.

DEVENTER
Two photos I took getting to grips again with my Leica M10-P (+Summicron 2/35) which I hadn't used in a long time.

It reminded me of William Eggleston's famous photograph! 04Aug24
