LES RENCONTRES d'ARLES
«SEPTEMBER 2024»

ARLES PHOTO 2024

The last time we did a major trip into France was nine years ago, in May 2015. And maybe for as long it has been my wish to visit Arles for the Photography event.
I am not a great fan of the French, I always run into frustrations and irritating their inefficiencies. This year would prove to be no different (we returned home one day early). But the basic plan was to finally visit Les Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles in the south of France and have stops on the way in Paris (3 nights) and on the Loire and to visit a few castles there.
There's so much to see here, so many venues (each often with multiple artists and photographers) that it takes some training and careful planning what to see and possibly what to skip, that I def'ly need a revisit to do it better next time!
Perhaps it will help others to plan their first visit...

I bought my passe-partout for multiple days here at the Tourist Office. The central carpark is close by.

We did not come for Vincent, but still...

The one day ticket would cost €34 while for multiple days €38. I intended to visit 3 days.

Guided by humanist ideals, the US documentary photographer, storyteller, and portraitist, Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015), focused her gaze on people with often diverse backgrounds, leading lives quite different from her own. In addition to celebrities of all sorts, Mark was especially drawn to those individuals overlooked or otherwise marginalized by society. [¬www.rencontres-arles.com/en/ - /mary-ellen-mark]

Mary Ellen Mark’s way of working was characterized by her warmth, empathy and perseverance. She devoted a lot of time and attention to her protagonists, in a few cases returning to photograph them again and again over the course of many years—thus forging close relationships with many. Her stories were often initially commissioned by well-known magazines such as Life, Vogue, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair; these pieces might then evolve into personal projects over time. "What I’m trying to do is make photographs that are universally understood... that cross cultural lines. I want my photographs to be about the basic emotions and feelings that we all experience," she said about her work. [¬www.rencontres-arles.com/en/ - /mary-ellen-mark]

Grounded in the themes and passions that help distinguish the photographer’s oeuvre, at the heart of Mary Ellen Mark.
'Encounters' are five of her most indepth projects, often realized most definitively in book form.
These projects focus on institutionalized women in the Oregon State Hospital, street children in Seattle, as well as sex workers in Mumbai, the needy and dying in Mother Teresa’s charities and travelling circus families in India.
In addition to her most iconic pictures, rare archival materials such as the photographer’s contact sheets, personal notes and official correspondence provide insight into the genesis of these long-term series for the first time.

Curators: Sophia Greiff and Melissa Harris.

Definitely the most publicized exhibition, this Retrospective of Mary Ellen Mark's photography. IMPRESSIVE!
Unfortunately there was no catalogue (and if there'd be one, it probably would have been only in French: NO USE )

I think the Mary Ellen Mark exhibition may have been in a university building, on this square was also
souvenir shops and may be something on Vincent van Gogh. Vincent ended up in a nearby hospital after suffering
a mental breakdown in which he cut off a piece of his ear. But we followed the 'photography trail', not Vincent's!

I almost missed this one, some of the entrances were a bit obscure. This led to the 2nd floor on that square.
It was quite noticable how many Japanes photographers had contributed work to Arles Photo 2024!

There were several nuances of documenting memories of the cataclysmic 2011 accident at the Fukushima nuclear
plant which followed an earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. Most were quite beyond my comprehension in
their visualization but it may be also too fragmented for me or perhaps I had still the Mary Ellen Mark
exhibition before me in its style and display.

Place de la République,
which is more or less the central point to explore the many photo venues.

This square led to the église Sainte-Anne d'Arles, which had a fantastic display.

Pity it had no catalogue in English, I would have loved to learn more
about the many artists on display here.

The many displays in this church in itself were something to aim my camera on too. Also for my #LOOK series.

Back on Place de la République, we see the entrance of the church on the left and a man with gloves and a mask on

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
I found too many artists here confusing and focussed on the images, and only very
few of these images impressed me. In less than 15 minutes I was outside again.

Now this made an impression on me, but I noticed how people only glanced at 'the finger' and walked on!

The map is confusing, eventhough it lists the venues. But from the titles
there is little to learn of its subject and therefor of little help to make choices.
Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
The Les Rencontres Bookshop on Place de la République had absolutely nothing
on photobooks with an English text. USELESS Most importantly they had NO copy of
the 'Arles 2024 Les Rencontres de La Photographie' in English, which would have made visiting
this event much easier for me. At the end of my visit to Arles I found such a copy at
'Actes Sud' bookstore, who are also the publishers of this useful book. A lesson for next time!

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
The Roman remains and ruins may well be of interest on a casual visit but I focussed myself on 'photography'.

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
Over the past few years murals & graffiti were subjects I became fond of. But here I fancied something else too...

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
Obviously a statement.. (EMAIL)

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
The Actes Sud bookstore. I was directed to this bookstore for the most likely chance of finding a
crime fiction novel in English (had finished the one I had brought with me) and indeed, succeeded (though
the selection was less than modest). More importantly, here I could buy the 'Arles 2024 Les Rencontres de
La Photographie' in Englis; alas, too late for increasing my understanding of ARLES PHOTO.
'Actes Sud' is also the publisher of this useful book. A lesson for next time!

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024

Asking in the photobookstore @Arles for a bookshop where I might find some crime fiction in English, she said I had the best chance with Librarie Actes Sud. Where indeed I found a Nicci French novel to my liking.
At home I consulted my '150 Bookstores' and indeed found it was included!
Other bookstores which I found I had visited included The Last Bookstore (Downtown LA - not to my liking), Powell's Books (Portland,OR great!), in the UK: Barter Books, Hatchard's and Blackwell's. And Bücherbogen in Berlin. And I shouldn't forget the Netherlands: Boekhandel Dominicanen and Scheltema.

A nice one for my #OnReading series. We talked somewhat, explained my

Sophie Calle: neither give nor throw away

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
Sophie Calle had her exibition 'Neither Give Nor Throw Away' in the catacombs of a church.
It's an expression of decay and while the individual items did not much appeal to me, the display here
in the catacombs got me photographing in high gear! Fantastice set up!

The book published by MRO I did buy because it also had text in English.

The commitment is artistic, sensory and militant, since this program cannot be contemplated without taking into
account the human and political crises that are currently plaguing the world.

A stylish building indeed, with many photo displays containing strong messages by very motivated (photo)journalists

So I enjoyed my first time at Les Recontres Photographiques d’Arles, one of the largest and oldest photography festivals. Exhibits were in beautiful old stone buildings and churches around town.
This year featured the legendary Mary Ellen Mark, a great curation of Lee Friedlander by filmmaker Joel Coen (which I missed because I lost oversight, there was too much), Sophie Calle had a fascinating display in the church catacombs, brilliant gathering by MRO and the Urban Art artists/photographers in the other church.
The many exhibits of Japanese photographers were of less interest to me, Japanes photography is often too difficult for me to comprehend and was lost to me in so many exhibitions.

I stopped visiting Arles after 1.5 days for my wife has no interest in photo exhibitions and I felt overwhelmed by the many photo venues. I couldn't get myself organized to select particular venues, only after reading and rereading the book by Actes Sud I started to understand more. Perhaps it is indeed a learning experience.
Our Boutique B&B in Générac didn't live to its expectatons to us either so we left the south of France a day early.

A nice location for lunch, but the 'plat du jour' was disappointing

Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024
Générac, a 25 minute drive from Arles, is a small town which has literally nothing to offer. The B&B felt too isolated.

By reading the massive (335+ pages!) Actes Sud book I also noted that the exhibitions were gouped in themese, such as 'Tremors and Turmoil', 'Traces', 'ReReadings', 'Emergences', et cetera. Had I know this beforehand I might have organized my visit perhaps a bit better.
