Looking for some early sunshine, escaping our wet & gloomy climate, we flew to Sevilla on March 22nd. After a day trip to Cadiz we visited Carmona on Sunday 24th. It came recommended in our guidebook.
Only a few days later we found adversity (weather) on our path, soon followed by a traumatic event.
But for now we enjoy a report on our sunday morning in Carmona, it brought us more than we had hoped for ☺

Palm Sunday is the Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter.
The feast commemorates Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels.
Its name originates from the palm branches waved by the crowd to greet and honor Jesus Christ as he entered the city. Palm Sunday marks the first day of Holy Week. [¬ Wikipedia]

Not sure what that historic sign 'Casa de la Primitiva Hermandad de los Nazarenos de Carmona (1597)' signifies...

Float no.2 and no.3; massive and weighty to walk around in the cobble stone streets!

We took a break on the city square for coffees, very much a local affair.
Soon we saw participants of the procession returning and pass us by.

The Alcázar del Rey Don Pedro is now converted to the Parador de Carmona.
It looked expensive and we did not venture inside, entrance I thought to be for guests only.

'Following the demise of the Caliphate of Córdoba in the early 11th century, Carmona (Qarmūna) was seized by Hammudid Berbers, and then by the also Berber Birzalid clan, becoming the head of the taifa of Carmona, a petty kingdom, which was conquered by the Abbadid taifa of Seville by 1067.
An Almoravid stronghold after the Almoravid conquest of the taifa of Seville, it was finally subdued by the Almohads after a settlement.
It was briefly occupied by Ibn Hamusk, before reverting to the Almohads in 1161.' [¬ Wikipedia]

'In 1247, Ferdinand III of Castile captured the town.
During the Late Middle Ages, the town preserved a Muslim-majority population ruled by a Christian minority.
The citadel of Carmona, now in ruins, was the principal fortress of Peter the Cruel (from 1350 to 1369), and contained a spacious palace within its defences.
Towards the end of the 15th century Carmona had an estimated population of about 8.000.
By the dawn of the Early Modern period, Carmona's economy was agriculture-based'. [¬ Wikipedia]

We did not explore the area around the parador for it had been quite a walk for us and we retraced our steps

'The residents of the town of Carmona took to the streets (March 2023) to demand justice for Ana Buza, demanding that the justice system recognize that her case was not a suicide, but a sexist murder perpetrated by her partner, as multiple indications affirm and as the victim's family maintains.'

'The events occurred in September 2019, and were archived after 36 hours, counting only on the statements of her partner who indicated that the young woman had committed suicide by jumping from the moving vehicle.
In November of that same year, the victim's family managed to have the case reopened, given her claims that Ana was suffering abuse from her partner, which was confirmed by the psychologist that Ana was going to because of the control that her partner exercised over her.
Despite these statements, and the fact that the forensic expert and accident reconstruction conclude that the death was due to an intentional hit-and-run, the judge has not changed the sentence on the case.

In July 2021, the case was reopened again at the request of the prosecutor's office, but again, the report made this time by the Civil Guard again stated that Ana Buza's death had occurred because she had jumped from the moving vehicle, without the possibility that there had been any run over. In the court's ruling, the evidence presented by Ana's family was rejected.'
